Proxxon make smaller scale items generally and be...Review by David Burton
Quality Value Price Proxxon make smaller scale items generally and because of that, they normally seem lighter grade although in reality that often isn't the case. That is the situation here where the down sides are that the aluminium look table is on the small side and the case is a bit plasticy and fairly light. But depending upon your use, these negatives are outweighed by the upsides.
The disc itself is a good size and I particularly like the variable speed. I rarely sand at high speed but the variable speed and large disc mean that by choosing different sanding positions, varying aggressiveness of sanding can be selected.
There's a dust extractor outlet that works fine - although I think the outlet itself is quite low down and so a large extractor connector may not fit.
Although I have only used the sander for fairly small items so far - mitred frames and the like - I think it would be fine with much larger sections too so long as these are properly supported - the unit itself can't support much weight.
The weight of the sander itself can be sorted out by screwing the sander down on a solid base - I'm using an old piece of 1" chipboard (heavy) which I then clamp down on my bench.
The other benefit is that the sanding side of unit is waterproof. Although the water reservoir and tray are extra (wouldn't be a problem to home make heath robinson versions) to have the added ability to wet sand is worth having.
The quality is as expected from Proxxon and the unit is no toy. I wanted a decent versatile sander that wasn't too heavy so could be moved around - and I'm perfectly happy with all that. If you are likely to be a heavy user of a disc sander or regularly want to sand large section items, then this unit may not be durable or heavy duty enough for you, but for finish sanding of odd shaped sections, I'd be more than happy with it.
